Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Uganda is globally renowned for its critical role in the conservation of the endangered Mountain Gorilla. Protection efforts date back to the 1920s, when these great apes were placed under the care of the Forestry Department. In the early 1990s, a significant milestone was achieved when Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Forests were gazetted as national parks and placed under the management of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). This marked a turning point in gorilla conservation, allowing for more structured protection and the development of regulated tourism.

Today, Uganda is home to over half of the world’s remaining Mountain Gorilla population, primarily found in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Beyond gorillas, Uganda offers some of the most diverse wildlife experiences in Africa. The open savannahs of Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Parks teem with elephants, buffaloes, and various antelope species, making them premier game-viewing destinations. These landscapes are dramatically set against the backdrop of the legendary Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the “Mountains of the Moon.”

For primate enthusiasts, Kibale National Park — often referred to as the primate capital of the world—is home to a large population of wild chimpanzees and an impressive diversity of forest bird species. Meanwhile, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, apart from hosting the iconic Mountain Gorillas, is recognised as Africa’s top birding destination, offering unmatched avian diversity in a pristine rainforest setting.
