Over the years now, tourism has proved to be Uganda’s main foreign exchange earner. This provides employment to a good percentage of the nation’s population. Hence cubing down the unemployment problem in the Country. Winston Churchill described Uganda as a fairy tale land, calling it the “Pearl of Africa”.

The ancient kingdoms of Buganda, Bunyoro, Busoga and Ankole flourished long before the European explorers arrived in Uganda. They followed the World’s longest river down stream to Uganda, looking for the source of the Nile. During the colonial times it was regarded as the most beautiful and potentially the richest country in East Africa.

How does political stability affect the growth of tourism in Uganda?

Now, after many years of civil turbulence under Idi Amin and Milton Obote, Uganda has settled down once more. In the 1970s when Idi Amin was the President of Uganda, there was instability in many part of the Country. The leadership did not do much to settle down the insurgence, which led to communities hunting the wildlife freely. This also led to the downfall of conservation, whereby much of the wildlife were hunted and some of them to extinction. We thank God who helped with the change of governance, hence restoring stability of our motherland Uganda.

After peace and stability was brought back home, conservation activities were restored. The Government started sensitizing the local communities, especially those near the parks, about the importance of conservation. This has happened under the rule of president Museveni and has rebuilt it’s important tourism industry. Uganda is indeed a beautiful country: a green and fertile land of high plateaus, luxuriant tropical forests, papyrus –swamps. This is also where the bizarre and endangered shoebill can still be found.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking and Conservation in Uganda:

Mountain Gorillas in Uganda, have been under protection by the Forestry department since the 1920s. This was changed in the 1990s when Bwindi forest and Mgahinga forest were gazetted as national park. They were given to the management of the national wildlife body, the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Uganda is home to more than half of the World’s remaining mountain gorilla population in Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga National park.

The open plains of Murchison falls and Queen Elizabeth National park are the best for game viewing. This is because they flourish with antelopes, buffalo and elephants. These breathtaking wildlife can be watched against a back drop of the mysterious Rwenzori Mountain ranges. The great forest of Kibale is home to thousands of chimpanzees as well as well as birds. Bwindi Impenetrable forest, the home to the mighty mountain Gorillas, also known to be the number one birding spot in Africa.
