Tourism in the great lakes region (East Africa) has changed greatly especially now that the locals are getting to know the importance of conservation. This is so due to the Governments’ sensitization to the local communities around conservation areas, encouraging them to cohabit with these wildlife. I can happily tell you that now the local communities in and around these conservation areas know that wildlife are the land-lords and we humans are the intruders.
When I joined the sector around the early 2000s, accessibility and connect-ability between different conservation areas was not that easy. This was mainly due to poor infrastructure, whereby the road network connecting to most of our parks and conservation reserves were unpaved. We used to take several hours traversing through the countryside from one park to another. For example it used to take us almost 10 hours driving about 350 kms, from Murchison Falls national park to Kibale forest national park.
The road network infrastructure has been improved lately and many of the roads in the tourism corridor have been paved by the various governments in this region. So now one can leave Murchison falls national park like at 08:00am in the morning and have lunch at Kibale forest national park. Also many accommodation facilities of different standards have been constructed in various areas along the wildlife parks. Now tourists and other travelers have a lot of accommodation choices to choose from, in different areas.
